Chief Detective Virgil Tibbs (Howard Rollins) believes he acted in self-defense when he shot a robbery suspect, a young teenage girl, who pointed a gun at him. But when the girl's gun cannot be found, even he begins to doubt the actions that he took during the robbery. Chief Bill Gillespie (Carroll O'Connor) and the rest of the Sparta police department work hard to try and find the missing weapon in order clear Tibbs of any wrongdoing. Alan Autry, Anne-Marie Johnson, Lois Nettleton and David Hart co-star.
