After a young lady, Charmaine Rodgers, is murdered in a local red-light district, Chief Bill Gillespie (Carroll O'Connor) suspects a short order cook named Clay Calder (Eric Pierpoint), who is new in town, may be involved in the murder of the young prostitute. However, Chief Detective Virgil Tibbs (Howard Rollins) thinks otherwise and is out to prove that a local criminal, Atticus Paul (Maceo Walker), is to blame for taking her short, troubled life. Alan Autry, Anne-Marie Johnson, Lois Nettleton and David Hart co-star.
